Innovation in Okinawa
OIST has entered a new phase in its growth and development. Having made significant investments to establish over 80 research units, sophisticated laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, and an interdisciplinary graduate school program, OIST is now positioned to become an active driver of R&D in Okinawa. The goal, as expressed by President Peter Gruss in 2017, is for OIST to “realize an innovation ecosystem in Okinawa that can take ideas to production and marketing and provide the basis for future jobs.” To realize this vision for an innovation ecosystem, OIST has built the Innovation Square Incubator ("I-Square"), where entrepreneurs from OIST and around the world can come together with established companies and experienced investors.

Build a community of innovators around OIST comprising people and companies committed to inventing solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.
